What You’ll Do
As Conservation Colorado’s staff and budget have grown, managing the financial work of Conservation Colorado and its sister organization, Conservation Colorado Education Fund, have become more complex. This position reports to the VP of Operations & Finance and functions as the organization’s bookkeeper. This role can evolve over time, but you will have these areas of responsibility.
In addition to your regular responsibilities, all staff are expected to participate at some level in organizational priorities including helping in certain fundraising efforts, taking part in our election-related activities, and committing to our organizational efforts around equity & inclusivity.
To be successful in this job, you will demonstrate the judgment, results-focused work, and efficiency to work well with our team. Fundamentally, we want someone who loves numbers, has impeccable attention to deadlines and details, and can help improve upon our financial systems. More specifically, you will have or be most or all of the following:
Enjoy working with numbers & spreadsheets. Having experience in bookkeeping is a strong bonus, but not necessary. But you do need to be comfortable working with and interpreting numbers. If you have a fluency with numbers and an interest in learning about nonprofit financial management, we want to talk to you and are willing to train the right person how to use our software (we use QuickBooks and Concur).
Highly organized & detail oriented. This position is responsible for myriad payroll, tax, corporate, and other legal filings as well as responsible for paying our staff and vendors. You’ll need to maintain systems to keep tasks from slipping through the cracks and juggle competing demands and prioritize without sacrificing quality. But no one is perfect, so the ability to bounce back from setbacks and use that experience to learn is critical.
Motivated by independent work. The bulk of the day-to-day work is completed independently, so while you will find opportunities to interact with all of our staff at various times & will work closely with your manager, you need to enjoy setting and accomplishing your goals on your own and be motivated by a strong sense of ownership over the work.
Manage a high volume of work with a spirit of helping. The political nature of our work means we are always busy; things are always changing and often they need to happen quickly. Couple that with a staff where most are not financially inclined, your job is to make life easier for our staff to get you the information you need so that the finance team is not holding up the work.
Solutions oriented. Have the ability to look at our financial systems and propose solutions to adapt to the evolving needs of the organization and to think three (or 30) steps ahead to ensure things run smoothly.

This position does not have an undergraduate education requirement. Spanish/English bilingual is a skill we value, but it is not a requirement. This is a full-time job but there can be some flexibility in the exact schedule.
Compensation and Benefits
The full-time salary range for this role is between $50,000-60,000, based on a wage analysis across the organization and new staff rarely starting at the top of the range.

All Conservation Colorado positions require in person work of some kind. However, when it comes to being in the office or working from home, we have embraced a hybrid work model where we offer people, in consultation with their managers, some flexibility on where they work based on organizational needs, job requirements, and personal preferences. The organization does not have a set policy for the number of days someone must be in the office and the days required for a specific individual or position will vary from person to person based on the needs of the job. Everyone is welcome to work in the office 100% of the time if they prefer or if their home environment is not conducive to working for whatever reason.
