Continental Divide Wilderness
For nearly a decade, conservationists, local leaders, mountain bikers, sportsmen, veterans, and others have come together to forge a proposal that balances protecting wilderness-quality lands with sustaining the recreational economy on which local communities depend. This balance of natural and recreational qualities is what attracts people from the world over to Summit County and eastern Eagle County to visit, play, be in nature, and live a higher quality of life.
Congressman Jared Polis introduced a bill in early 2015 that would protect 60,000 acres of public lands in Colorado’s emblematic central mountains. This legislation enjoys broad support from a diverse array of stakeholders who have been involved in the process for many years. It garnered further attention in May 2016 when Senator Michael Bennet announced a companion bill that would preserve the same vital wildlife habitat in Summit and Eagle Counties as well as 30,000 additional acres to preserve Camp Hale as the country’s first National Historic Landscape.
- Wilderness protection is the gold standard for keeping our public lands wild and pristine. Once Congress designates a wilderness area, it is protected forever.
- Wilderness stimulates economic growth in nearby communities by enhancing property values, and is associated with increases in employment rate and gains in personal incomes by increasing the visibility and desirability of nearby communities.
- Wilderness areas are protected from mining, roads, logging and any surface-disturbing activities. This supports wildlife, healthy rivers, cleaner air, and provides space for people to recreate.
We have been working with Representative Polis and Senator Bennet from the start to ensure that this wilderness area is properly protected. We’ve rallied broad grassroots support behind this campaign to show our legislators that it matters to local constituents. Wilderness efforts often take years to come to fruition, but we’re dedicated to seeing this through to the end.
“While the beauty of the Continental Divide proposal is undeniable, the quest to win permanent protection for these remaining unprotected lands of the White River National Forest has been hard fought…” Read more about one of Colorado’s most incredible places and why we are working hard to conserve it.
Thank Senator Bennet for his Continental Divide legislation!
We need to show Senator Bennet that his efforts haven’t gone unnoticed and thank him for this bold leadership.
