Conservation Colorado Supports Colorado Proposition 137
October 26, 2026
Why does Conservation Colorado support Colorado Proposition 137?
Conservation Colorado supports Colorado Proposition 137. Colorado Proposition 137 (formerly Initiative 308) is on the Nov. 3, 2026 ballot. Proposition 137 will provide support for existing but underfunded state grant programs that use science-backed tools to reduce wildfire risk and enhance watershed health, protecting both communities and drinking water.
What does Colorado Proposition 137 do?
Without raising taxes, Proposition 137 will allow the state to keep the money it receives from the existing state sales tax on sporting goods and equipment and invest that money in crucial conservation work. It directs sales tax the state already collects on sporting goods: 47.5% to Great Outdoors Colorado, 47.5% to the Colorado Wildfire Prevention and Water Fund, 2.5% to the Outdoor Equity Fund and 2.5% to outdoor recreation economic development.
Why does this fit Conservation Colorado’s mission?
Conservation Colorado supports Proposition 137 because it protects Colorado’s land and water and reduces wildfire risk for our communities. We work to protect Colorado’s climate, air, land, water and communities. Dedicated funding for conservation and wildfire prevention moves Colorado toward a better future.
Does Proposition 137 authorize commercial logging or clear-cutting?
No. Proposition 137 does not create any new authority for commercial logging, and it does not require clear-cutting. It funds existing state wildfire, forest-health and watershed grant programs, using sales tax the state already collects on sporting goods. Projects those programs fund, including forest thinning to reduce wildfire fuel, still follow the programs’ rules and state law.
